About Us
Glenifer Park Horses is a small business, created and run by Anika Piket, in southern Tasmania.
We train and re-home off the track horses, starting them on their path to a rewarding life after racing.
Our off the track mascot, and Anika’s primary eventing horse; “GP He’s a Wizard” affectionately known as Harry. Pictured here ready for a showjumping round together by our wonderful sponsor Jemima Baghurst Photography.
Glenifer Park Horses started out as a little side hustle selling horses for a bit of extra cash, and is slowly growing into a life long dream.
I wasn’t lucky enough to be born into a horsey family, I have worked long and hard to gain the necessary knowledge to care for my own horses and establish myself in the local horse community as a reputable trainer and seller of safe horses. Starting out from nothing, one of my very first horses was an off the track thoroughbred, as that was all I could afford! Her name was Paris, and she sparked a lifelong love for thoroughbreds, and the inspiration behind what I do today.
Since Paris, I have owned and educated many other thoroughbreds, and am always in awe of the versatility of this breed. They come in all shapes and sizes, and can thrive in so many different careers; from eventing to camp-drafting you will find thoroughbreds in every discipline. Like all horses, they require the correct training to do any job properly, and here at Glenifer Park my aim is to provide the crucial foundations that are imperative to a rewarding life after racing.
I have received regular riding lessons for many years, and gone from trotting on a lunge line to where I am now with the help of many amazing coaches. I have worked in the racing industry in different stables, and gained much insight into the lives of thoroughbreds before they come into my care. Being a track rider for many years means I understand what training these horses already have received and what areas I need to focus on to help their education.
All of our horses start with a spell in the paddock to help reset their brain and body from the strains of racing, and are then brought into regular work. While in training they are exposed to dogs, cats, sheep, cows, tractors and other farm equipment, and more. They start the basics of dressage to establish correct and responsive buttons, they are trail ridden in small groups and solo rides, started over small jumps and trot poles, and trailered to new locations for outings to learn what is necessary of them in any environment. Our training systems, and careful selection of appropriate horses has been highly successful, placing horses with many happy customers who are now excelling in their new homes.
I believe in finding the right home for every horse, and no horse is sold that I don’t have 100% confidence that they have the experience and skills necessary to achieve the goals of the new home. Following the sale I am always available for consults, lessons, extra training, or just a helping hand to make the transition that much easier.
Training horses is my passion, putting in the time and effort and seeing all your hard work pay off is a feeling you just can’t beat. With the help of local and visiting coaches, I continue to educate myself in the best ways to train, feed, and generally allow the horses that pass through my hands to thrive. I am always learning and will continue to learn and improve forever!
Many elements go into training a horse; know how, a huge amount of patience, some help on the side, some more patience, time, lots of energy, and a bit of extra patience just in case. The saying “two steps forward, one step back” is used almost daily for anyone working with these amazing animals. Despite all of this, horses get into your blood and you can’t get free of them. It is truly a labour of love, and I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
None of this would be possible without endless support from family, friends, and the horse community at large, and this is my opportunity to thank all who support myself and enable this business to succeed. Coaches, sponsors, clients, and so much more that goes on behind the scenes, you’re not overlooked and your continual support is incredible. I couldn’t do it without you!
